Ashbourne Heights is the perfect base for holidays in the Peak District, with a delightful countryside setting and breathtaking views, popular cycle routes and market towns nearby, the thrills of Alton Towers, or chill at the on-park indoor pool.
About the Peak District
The Peak District is a National Park of rugged beauty, with peat-covered moorlands, limestone dales and beautifully quaint towns and villages. Don’t be fooled by the name – Peak doesn’t derive from the landscape, instead it is taken from an Anglo-Saxon tribe which one lived in the region.
The region is full of character and rewards anyone who is prepared to explore.
Access to the popular Tissington Trail sits at the entrance to the park and is enjoyed by cyclists and those who love walking, with 13 miles of traffic-free trail which follows the former Buxton to Ashbourne railway. Should you only fancy a short stroll the trail is perfect too, there are plenty of information points and picnic areas to enjoy.
The bustling market town of Ashbourne filled with historic buildings, good quality shops, restaurants and bars is only three miles from the park.
Historic Chatsworth House is home to the Duke of Devonshire and houses one of Europe’s most significant art collections, plus there is more than 100 acres of garden with giant water features, beautiful flowers and magnificent views across a 1000 acre park. For children there’s also a working farmyard and adventure playground, plus shops, restaurants and an award winning Farm shop.
Alton Towers is one of Britain’s biggest theme parks, packed with rides and attractions for all ages. The mix of speeding roller coasters, giant flumes and scary houses is irresistible for thrill seekers and attracts more than two million visitors each year.
Carsington Water is a reservoir that doubles as a popular visitor attraction with a whole host of exciting activities – from boat to bird watching and from walking to water sports. There’s plenty to do off the water too, and there is an award-winning restaurant, playground and miles of footpaths and bridleways to explore.
The Heights of Abraham
For cable cars and caverns head to The Heights of Abraham, which has been a tourist attraction in the Peak District for more than 200 years. The setting consists of a hilltop Country Park and caverns set in 60 acres of woodland – reached by a cable car travelling over a deep limestone gorge.
